Atlantic
Salmon Fly Fishing in Patagonia
For
the avid and experienced salmon fly fishermen the Dos Rios (two rivers) Salmon
Fish Camp will be set up again this year. It will start operation in January 2006
and run until May 1 2006. Again we will be in an exploratory mode searching out
more areas of the two rivers. Last year we located and fished some great pools
that contained leaping salmon that would be a fierce challenge to any experienced
salmon fly fishing angler. The Chinooks are in the 40 to 50 pound class and Salar
salmon are running from 10 to 25 pounds. Jorgen Stenberg of Sweden caught a cock
salmon that weighed 13.2 lbs.
Location
of Dos Rios Camp
The Dos Rios Fish Camp is located in Chile. We transfer you to the
camp from Puerto Montt or from Alto Puelo Lodge by helicopter. For those who choose
not to fly, there is an optional route. The camp has all the necessary amenities
plus a great cook to prepare those hearty meals after a long day of salmon fishing.
History
of the Camp
Patagonia
Adventures started exploring the river systems of Chile in 1988 and found it to
be an excellent place for fly fishing for large brown and rainbow trout. Later
a lodge
was
built to accommodate anglers fly fishing the Patagonia waters. During that time
wild salmon (both Atlantic Salar and Pacific Chinook salmon started showing up.
As the years progressed the salmon numbers increased and so Patagonia Adventures
began gathering information on where the best places where to fish for these salmon.
Thus, In 2005, the Dos Rios Salmon Camp was born on the basis of exploring and
testing the waters. Its first year was successful in that there were many salmon
seen and located.
Two
experienced salar anglers from Sweden traveled to Patagonia to fish this unusual
area and found it very much to be like home and with Salmon to boot. They fished
three days with salmon flies and tackle and caught the salmon that they came for
along with some very nice brown trout. Many large Chinook salmon (40 to 50 lbs.)
were also present in the same waters with the Atlantic salmon but on different
beds of the river.
Abundant
Aquatic Life
The bodies of water and all the tributaries
that flow into the Dos Rios Valley have abundant aquatic life supporting its fish
population. Rainbow and brown trout are the most abundant with various native
fish. In recent years and especially since the 1990´s salmon have appeared.
both Pacific and Atlantic wild salmon now spawn with success in all parts of Chile´s
river systems.
